Design and Communication Graphics (DCG)

Design and Communication Graphics (DCG)

DCG is the follow on from Technical Graphics at Junior Cycle. It is a new and exciting subject which challenges not only the students drawing skills but also draws upon their IT skills.

The subject covers similar topics to junior cycle which accounts for 60% of the course.

The main areas are as follows:

  • Auxiliary & Orthographic Projection
  • Axonometric Projection
  • Perspective
  • Conics
  • Oblique Planes
  • Intersecting Planes
  • Interpenetration & Envelopments
  • Structural Forms
  • Surface Geometry
  • Dynamic Mechanisms

The remaining 40% of the subject is based on a design topic which is completed between September and January of the leaving cert year. The student’s project is based on a design brief given by the department. The students must use a variety of skills to complete the project. Students will use their research skills to investigate the brief and give a graphic representation of their findings using a combination of Microsoft Publisher & Freehand sketches/notations. The students then use a drawing programme called Solid Works (provided by school) to create an identical representation in 3d format of the given topic for part A. Part B requires the students to create their very own design based on a chosen theme or else modify the previously drawn object.

See below some of the projects from previous years.
